Description

Recent technics and tools for insect morphology and systematics are reviewed. Micro-focused X-ray computed tomography (micro-CT) is an innovation to observe internal structure of insect body. For example, flight muscles of the horned beetle, sounding organ and ovaries of the cicada, and fossil insects encased in the ambers are easily observed by micro-CT. Nano-suits® method and field emission scanning electric microscope (FE-SEM) are effective to observe and take photographs minute structures of insect surface in very high magnification (more than 100,000x) even fresh or alive insect body. High resolution image in high magnification of insect microstructure is helpful and beneficial not only for biologists but also for engineers inspired by biomimetics. It is easily and practically used by the image retrieval platform (system) even a beginner for entomology.
