Abstract

Multiple studies have indicated that challenges exist in children’s comprehension of functions. In order to analyze the factors of the task, this research focuses on the function of the instructional system by Yokochi and others. And this research establishes a theoretical model for the ideal teaching method of functions, and aims to clarify the challenges based on that model. The theoretical framework applies comprehension research, and is categorized into 'Stage of event recognition', ‘Stage of developing abstraction’ and ‘Stage of abstraction’. Based on this model and investigating the system of teaching functions by Yokochi et al., it became clear that the teaching system is in the ‘stage of developing abstraction’, attempting to develop a ‘developing concept’. The findings also imply that the students had not sufficiently developed the ‘developing concept’.
