<p>     In order to easily and non-invasively grasp the reaction state of anaerobic digestion, which is one of the key-technologies concerning the resource recovery, spectra both fluorescence and reflectance of anaerobic digestion liquid (digestate) at different Fe concentrations were measured simultaneously. In the spectrofluorimetry, two kinds of fluorescent substances (aromatic protein-like substance and humus acid) as substrates derived from the methane fermentation reaction were observed. These emission intensities tended to increase with increasing Fe concentration, but decreased under maximum Fe concentration conditions. Spectral reflectance quantitatively showed the blackening of digestate with Fe addition. In the range from 500 to 1000 nm, Fe concentration and spectral reflectance showed a very high negative correlation (r > – 0.9). On the other hand, the iron concentration and redox potential of digestate showed a very high positive correlation (r > 0.9). Furthermore, the emission intensity derived from humus acid showed no linear relationship with Fe concentration. From these results, it was suggested that the black precipitate, which shows a decrease in spectral reflectance, is due to iron sulfide generation accompanied by consumption of reducing power.</p>
