Abstract

It was investigated for the adsorption behaviors of isocyanate monomer, a main component of polyurethaneadhesives, on the surface of carbon steel by surface analysis. It was suggested that from XPS and ToF-SIMSanalysis that isocyanate monomer reacted with hydroxyl group on steel surface and amines generated byhydrolysis reaction of isocyanates with water and hydroxyl groups on steel. The formation of these covalentbonds on the surface of substrates was considered to be one reason that polyurethane makes good adhesives.
