Abstract

This article reviews the feasibility and prospects of muon radiography applied in alpine glaciers through an example of our field observations in the Jungfrau region (Switzerland). We installed emulsion films under the uppermost part of the Aletsch glacier, the largest glacier in the Central European Alps, and succeeded in measuring the shape of the bedrock underneath the glacier with resolutions ranging from 5 to 10 m. Since most of the alpine glaciers face a rapid recession due to the global warming, a lot of effort is paid by glaciologists and local authorities to understand the bedrock topography beneath active glaciers. Muon radiography will be a fundamental tool for monitoring of such structures, in a complementary way to other geophysical inspection methods.
