説明

The relation between the Japanese Standardized Olfactory Test (T & T Olfactometer) and the Odor Stick Identification Test for Japanese was investigated in 108 participants ranging in age from 20 to 81 years. Thresholds for 5 odors were measured using the T & T Olfactometer. Odor identification of 13 odors familiar to Japanese was measured using the Odor Stick Identification Test. A significant negative correlation between threshold and identification rate was obtained : higher thresholds were associated with lower identification rates. The Pearson's correlation coefficient was -0.69. This finding suggests that the Odor Stick Identification Test is an appropriate screening test for the T & T Olfactometer, which is beneficial because the T & T Olfactometer is a more time consuming test than the Odor Stick Identification Test. Nonsmoking participants showed lower thresholds and more educated participants showed better identification ability, suggesting that smoking is more important variable in threshold test and that higher education is more important variable in odor identification test.
