Abstract

This article focuses on the question-and-answer activities of graduate school seminars in a Japanese university. Utilizing the case of a Chinese international student, this paper describes the difficulties encountered by a newcomer to the seminars, and how these difficulties were overcome. With the consent of the research participant, a semi-structured weekly interview was conducted 19 times. Also, one participation observation was carried out. The survey results were analyzed using the KJ-method. After analyzing the data based on time-lines, eleven concepts were identified and summarized. Applying the eleven concepts, it was determined that “acquisition of shared repertoire”, “desire to grow in the community”, “renewal of participation rules and identity” were transformed into participation attitudes. Finally, the significance of these results future development and suggestions for Japanese education are detailed in this article.
