Abstract

The Tohoku Earthquake that caused catastrophic damages on North East Coast areas has given immeasurable impacts on Japanese people, society, and the economy. The influences were not only direct ones due to the tsunamis but also indirect ones such as; the inference on agricultures, stock farming, and fishing, caused by radioactive contaminations, power shaving quotas due to shortage of electricity by nuclear power plants shut down, the suffers of export industries due to rapid rise of the yen, and the overseas transfer of productions. Repeated natural disasters in the last decades have raised importance of Business Continuity Plan (BCP), and from this point of view Telework has been attracting attentions. After the earthquake, in the east Japan area, the disaster gave huge inference widely. Rotation power supply cut was conducted against shortage of electricity, public transport was disturbed and social and economic confusion was caused due to radiation contamination. Against all these unforeseen problems, to keep employees safeties and solve commutation problems, companies were forced to cope with stand by or work at home with Telework method. The Telework is now highlighted from the point of BCP and power saving. In this report, through the authors experience and visit to Tohoku, how Telework functioned just after the earthquake will be explained, and expectation and prospects of Telework will be discussed.
