Abstract
This study examines the relationship between quality of life and suburban development. I will investigate how a newly developed large-scale shopping mall in a regional Japanese city, Kumamoto has been impacting the living conditions of those living near the mall. We conducted a survey of households with small children whose lives have experienced changes after the shopping mall development. We found 95% of the respondents feeling deteriorations in their living environments, including heavy traffic jam, noise problems and declined safety after the arrival of the shopping mall. Our findings empirically explain how large-scale shopping malls can pose threats to the quality of life and urban sustainability of otherwise healthy living environments for households with children.
