Abstract

From the standpoint of land conservation and/or reasonable land utilization, it is highly helpful to group soils based on their erodibility or the erosion hazard. Depending upon the combination of topographic, geological, and soil factors among various factors involved, it was attempted that soils were grouped according to water erosion hazard into four classes as (1) none to slight, (2) moderate, (3) high, and (4) very high. Vegetation factor, which was known to play an important role in erosion, was excluded on the assumption that the surface cover might be temporarily bared when an area would be developed. The grouping of soils according to water erosion hazard class may be shown in a predictable water erosion map through assessing water erosion hazard on every mapping unit shown in a given basic soil map. An example of such a predictable water erosion map was prepared by using the soil map compiled by Oyama.
