Abstract

In this paper, we tried to reorganize the framework of Kazuo Itoga's colony scheme and his viewpoint toward intellectual disability in Showa 20's, focusing on ideological background in relation with social circumstances in those days. In Itoga's colony scheme, we can observe his devotion to colony as a more universally structured support system, not from the viewpoint of social defense but from the viewpoint of direct efficacy in assuming a role of restoring Japan from the devastation of the war, through nurture and education of intellectually-handicapped children addressing to the fundamental question as to why we human beings exist. We also identified underlying profound philosophy that would not permanently fix the relationship between mentally-handicapped children and society but would aim to change the way society should be structured through the support for them. Furthermore, we found that Itoga's thoughts on his involvement in the peace of the world guided him into that direction.
