Description

Field observations at harbor areas in Tokyo and Yokohama, central Japan, showed that the fundatrices and fundatrigenia of a Sitobion species infested Rosa hirtula and R. rugosa (Rosaceae) from late March to late April, and that the sexuals occurred in December. These morphs agreed morphologically with the equivalent morphs of S. akebiae (Shinji) found on Akebia spp. Moreover, the alate alienicolae produced by the spring migrants of the Sitobion species and bred on the ears of grasses, Hordeum murinum and Lolium perenne, under transfer experiment, agreed morphologically with the alate alienicolae of S. akebiae that were produced by the spring migrants from Akebia spp. These results suggest that the Sitobion species should be S. akebiae, and that it migrates from not only Akebia but also R. hirtula and R. rugosa to grasses. The two Rosa species are newly reported as the primary host plants for the heteroecious population of S. akebiae.
