Description

This article discusses the reception of Scandinavian literature and culture, specifically that of Selma Lagerlöf (1858-1940), in Japan. The following four topics will form the subject of our focus: 1. Scandinavian plays as part of the“New Play Movement” in the Meiji period, 2. Ellen Key's influence on the women's movement and the 'New Education Movement' in the Taisho period, 3. Christians' interest in Enrico Dalgas, Folkehøgskole and the anti-war movement during the Militarism, 4. Yamamuro Shizuka's comprehensive, systematic inclusion of Scandinavian literature in the post-war period. In Japan, today, the Scandinavian countries are generally perceived as pastoral nations, and Lagerlöf as a motherly pacifist. The purpose of this article is to analyze the process that shaped such stereotypical images of Scandinavian literature and Selma Lagerlöf.
