Abstract

We successfully determined the first ionization potential of lawrencium, element 103, experimentally for the first time. Precise and accurate experimental determination of the first ionization potential gives direct information on the binding energy of valence electron which would be affected by strong relativistic effects. However, such measurements are hampered by the difficulty in obtaining the heaviest elements on scales of more than one atom at a time. We have newly developed an efficient surface ion-source and a detection system coupled to a mass-separator, and a novel measurement method using surface ionization technique.
