Abstract

This paper analyzed a reading workshop conducted in Japanese language lessons, and examined its benefit for helping students to become good readers. The high school teacher in this study, who was influenced by American educator Nancie Atwell’s reading workshop, developed his own reading workshop suitable for a high school Japanese classroom. There are three phases in his workshop: Book Talk & Mini Lesson, Independent Reading & Conference, and Sharing Time. During the first phase, the teacher recommends one or two books from several genres and teaches reading skills. During the Independent Reading & Conference phase, the students read books they have chosen themselves, and then the teacher discusses with each student what they have read and whether they enjoyed their reading time. Further, he also helps students to choose books to read. In Sharing Time, students share their reading experience with two other students. This paper suggests that this reading workshop could complement traditional Japanese language lessons by assuring an enjoyable reading experience and independent reading time.
