Description

At the present time, various phenomena in various countries around the world are beginning to be evaluated from the perspective of the environment or sustainability, and not only virgin nature but also the agro-natural environment is generating greater social concern. Accordingly, expectations of farming and mountain villages are becoming higher. They are expected to play a role in preserving the ecosystem, promoting sustainable use and management of resources and safeguarding the national landscape. Furthermore, they are expected to serve as models for such activities.

However, in Japan, agricultural communities in mountain areas suffering from aging and declining populations, can no longer play the role expected of them. On the other hand, ‘I turns’ (people from urban areas who want to escape the stress of a competitive lifestyle and go and live in the country) and local support activities in these villages are increasing. The indication is that people living in urban areas are more eagerly seeking an interaction with ‘satoyama’ (the area between mountain foothills and arable flat land). In such a situation, what are we to think about our relations with the surrounding nature or mountains? This thesis considers the issue from the perspective of “our attitude toward nature.” It highlights the importance of giving thought to the history of the relationship between people and the surrounding nature, and to their social systems, which allow them to flexibly adapt their ways of life to an unpredictable and uncontrollable nature.
