Description

“Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto” was registered as one of the cultural properties of the World Heritage in 1994. In this article, I shall examine the processes of the cityscape-problem, historical environmental preservation, and the urban innovation of Kyoto City. I explore them from the viewpoint of the “consumption of tradition.”

Kyoto City government has been attempting to resolve the cityscape-problem and carry out the revitalization of the inner city since the mid 1990’s. The preservation of the Machiya (traditional wooden houses) and the campaign to revive the tourism industry emerged rapidly. Land-use-zoning is going to be introduced, but the consequences of the new ordinance are not predictable. However, it is difficult to avoid the pessimistic diagnosis that Kyoto is changing into a Theme Park. It is my conclusion that we have to consider carefully how best to carry out the urban innovation of Kyoto City and resist the pressure of the “outside perspective” and “global perspective” of the contemporary globalizing society.
