Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to describe the background of Environmental Research with Citizen Participation, which has recently attracted increased interest and is becoming more widespread in the research field, in relation to change in environmental issues. Based on analysis of adaptive management policy in nature restoration, it has been made clear that there are changes in the roles of social actors, the social framework of issues, and research methods. These changes also require quality of data for social consensus building, and a new type of research method with citizen participation.

Changes in environmental issues also affect the role of the natural scientist, and the diversity of the people concerned. Therefore, we come to realize that the role of environmental sociology, which has criticized the paternalism of scientific knowledge of experts, is not so obvious as we expected before.
