Currently there is an increase in the incidence of grass pollinosis in patients ranging from young children to the elderly, and it is critical that we identify the sources of the airborne antigenic grass pollens causing the problems. The aim of this study has been to determine the sources of all airborne pollen during the autumn of 2002-05. As the range of grass species in flower changes through the overall flowering season, the airborne pollen populations were studied by dividing them into two seasonal populations: the late summer population (LSP) and the autumn population (AP). Pollen size data were taken from eighteen species (including one variety) blooming in the late summer and from nineteen species in the autumn. The resulting pollen size means were compared with the median results of the two seasonal populations. Among the grass species data which were compared, Sorghum halepense (Johnson grass) was shown to have the mean closest to the medians for the LSP grass pollen data, 40.0 to 42.5μm, while the means of both Miscanthus sinensis and M. sacchariflorus were approximately equal to the medians for the AP grass pollen data, 37.5μm. We gave a 95% confidence ellipse for Sorghum halepense and for the two Miscanthus species. As a result, the LSP pollen count within the Sorghum halepense ellipse was ca. 65% of the total pollen count. The AP pollen counts within the ellipse for Sorghum halepense, Miscanthus sinensis and M. sacchariflorus were all within the range of 63〜77%. Consequently, these three grasses are considered to be the main sources of autumn airborne grass pollen. We discuss the specific allergens of the above three grass species, and the adoption of allergy tests for these allergens from a clinical point of view.
