Description
Emission standards for PM (particulate matter) in the world have been stricter year by year. Although a gasoline direct injection engine has an advantage of lower fuel consumption, it emits more PMs than a port fuel injection (PFI) engine. In Europe, a gasoline particulate filter (GPF) has been introduced for the filtration of gasoline soot. Similar to a diesel particulate filter (DPF), PM is collected by GPF when the PM passes through the porous filter walls. It would be better to have better GPF filtration efficiency, but at the same time, its large pressure rise should be avoided. In this study, using carbon particles as model soot, we evaluated the filtration performance of GPF. Using three GPFs of different length, we examined the pressure drop (filter backpressure) and the filtration efficiency experimentally, compared with DPF.
