Description

The concept, commons, is attracting us again because of the growing importance of environmental issues which make us think about the real relationship between nature and human-beings. These concerns are quite different from the traditional studies on commons in the field of rural sociology. We have two findings in this paper. One is that the Japanese Mura (hamlet) has traditionally given its poorer members the right to use the commons lands. The important point is, this right is for the inferior or poor members, and is not a paternalistic gift from the superior or big land owners. We showed this fact by analyzing land-ownership in the Mura. The second finding is that Mura commons are not destined to vanish away under the pressure of modern development. They will continue to exist as a component of modern agricultural production systems in the Mura.
