Abstract

This study aimed to clarify the effects of basic skills instruction in humanitude for a home-based caregiver of a family member with dementia on (a) the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), (b) caregivers’ understanding of eldery person with dementia, and (c) caregivers’ affirmative emotions regarding care. A semi-structured interview was conducted with a home-based caregiver of a family member with dementia as a pilot study. Seven categories including 【feeling cooperative attitude without refusing care】, 【awareness of new insights about persons with dementia】, 【feeling decrease in anxiety regarding caregiving and caregivers’ future】, and 【feeling improvement in confidence and skills regarding caregiving】 were identified after caregivers received humanitude training. Introducing humanitude training for home-based caregivers decreased BPSD in the patient, and improved caregivers’ understanding of eldery person with dementia and affirmative emotions of the caregiver regarding care. This indicates its effectiveness in reducing difficulties that family caregivers face in caring for elderly family members with dementia.
