Description

The purposes of the present article are to review the role of safety behavior in the maintenance of social anxiety disorder (SAD) symptoms, and to compare the effectiveness for social anxiety disorder of treatment by exposure for decreasing safety behavior with treatment by the traditional method of exposure. Review of the published literature indicated that (1) from the point of view of aspects of cognitive theory, safety behavior plays a role in the maintenance of negative beliefs, (2) safety behavior should be distinguished from appropriate coping behavior functionally, and (3) major results from previous studies showed that treatment by exposure for decreasing safety behavior is more effective for social anxiety disorder than the traditional exposure treatment. The need for patient education about safety behavior, the need for a decrease in safety behavior and for learning skills for receiving appropriate appraisal from others, and the need for further research on the treatment of exposure for decreasing safety behavior for social anxiety disorder were discussed.
