Description

The purpose of the present study was to explore influences of depression and anxiety on self-care behavior in patients with type 2 diabetes. Outpatients with type 2 diabetes (N=65) were recruited from an endocrinology and metabolism clinic. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses showed that anxiety affected diet therapy and depression affected foot-care, both as components of diabetes-related self-care behavior. On the other hand, depression and anxiety did not significantly affect exercise therapy. Before providing medical-treatment instruction in alimentary therapy or foot care for type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with depression or anxiety, the patients’ strategies for coping with the depression and anxiety that may arise when performing self-care behavior should be investigated. For doing that, assessment and intervention by behavior analysis may be effective.
