Abstract

Durability of gold-layer photographs for rubfastness and waterproof was increased by covering them with a silica layer prepared by the high-frequency sputtering method. We attempted smoothing of the gold layer by controlling baking condition to gold layers and developing condition to form gold particles, and analyzed the effect of them to the layer strength. The strength was measured with pencil-hardness test. Baking at high temperature and long period increased smoothness of the layer. Addition of ascorbic acid to the developer formed much finer gold particles and this contributed to the smoothness. Rubfastness of the gold layer covered with silica layer did not depend so much on this smoothness. On the other hand, smooth layer had high resistance to the deterioration on immersing in water. Appropriate layer-forming increased the durability of gold-layer photographs.
