Description

An 80-year-old right-handed woman was admitted to this nursing home 60 days after the onset of intracerebral hemorrhage in the left frontal lobe. She showed no gross motor paralysis. Her spontaneous speech was scarce and she sometimes responded with a word or a short sentence when she was spoken to. Her yes- and no-responses to questions were vague, but her facial expression and behavior suggested her nonverbal comprehension of circumstances are generally preserved. In her daily living in the nursing home, she showed utilization behavior, that is, she tried to open a window lock or a door when she saw it. In addition to that, she often behaved as if she was a staff member of the facility. For example, when several members of the facility staff sat around a table and had a meeting, she came up to sit on a chair like a participant in the meeting, listened to others talk with nodding, and picked up on the handouts for the meeting on the table. Her behaviors, which were triggered by the environment of the nursing home, are identical to the Lhermitteʼs original description of environmental dependency syndrome.
