Description

In recent years, many studies have investigated the mechanisms of empathy to establish the theoretical framework, and its neural mechanisms have been gradually uncovered. I proposed the classification framework of empathy including 1) behavioral empathy, 2) bodily empathy, and 3) subjective empathy, and refine the definitions and characteristics of each type. After spelling out the difference of empathy and sympathy, the theoretical relation between “theory of mindʼʼ and empathy was reconsidered. Also, recent studies that focusing on the bodily contribution to empathy were reviewed, and summarize the neural mechanisms of each type of empathy depending on both brain networks and localization perspectives. Finally, empathy deficits in developmental disorder and neuropsychological cases were briefly reviewed from pathological aspects.
