Description

Background. Vocal cord dysfunction (VCD) is a disease which is a complication of asthma; however, reports on VCD diagnosed using bronchoscopy are limited. Case. A 54-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of dyspnea despite asthma premedications. Inspiratory stridor was noted, and neck-chest computed tomography showed normal airways and lungs. Fractional exhaled nitric oxide was also normal. Bronchoscopy revealed a normal bronchial pathway; however, the vocal cord was closed during the inspiratory phase with a diamond-shaped opening at the membranous portion. During slow inhalation, the vocal cord stricture was mitigated. Therefore, the patient was diagnosed with VCD, and dyspnea was improved with slow inhalation. Conclusion. VCD should be considered in the differential diagnosis of intractable asthma. In this case, bronchoscopy helped its diagnosis.
