Description
The population in Japan is highly concentrated into the grater Tokyo region, and the level of concentration is imcomparative with most countries. The need to distribute the population has been discussed for a long period. To make the population more distributed, we need empirical evidence about the cause of concentration. Previous studies of international comparison have shown that lower level of infrastructure investment can be one of the factors of concentration, and some studies in Japan have also suggested that the concentration of infrastructure investment has been leading to the concentration of population. However, the previous studies have not provided detailed and quantitative analysis sufficiently. In this study, we analysed the relationship between the concentration of road infrastructure and population. Domestic and international data analysis showed that over-concentrated investment in road infrastructures can cause over-concentration of population.
