Description

To understand dissolution mechanisms of minerals, it should be important to analyze the local condition of solution just around dissolving crystals. Here we tried to visualize the local distribution of Ca2+ concentration around dissolving calcite, in addition to pH, by using fluorescent probes. When calcite dissolves in water, the concentration of Ca2+ ion just after surfaces once increases rapidly, and then decreases. By comparing with the tendency of pH distribution, the reaction of carbonate and bicarbonate ions should play a key role in the dissolution of calcite.
