The sentence final particles “yo” and “ne” have been studied from various perspectives, such as Japanese grammar, cognitive science, and autism. However, most studies have characterized “yo” and “ne” according the researcherʼs individual interpretations of a small set of examples. This study established some impression items based on definitions from previous studies and presented participants with seven typical sentence patterns involving either “yo”, “ne” or no particle, and obtained impression ratings for each sentence utilizing the questionnaire method. The results indicate that sentences without a particle elicit impressions of being “easy to understand”, sentences with “yo” have the effect of directing listener attention to the speakerʼs thoughts and feelings, and sentences with “ne” evoke impressions of being “comfortable to hear” and have the effect of eliciting the listenerʼs thoughts and feelings. These results highlight how speech functions in conveying messages and prompting interaction, for while sentences without particles are associated mainly with conveying the message, the particles of “yo” and “ne” emphasize interaction.
