Abstract

Some empirical and semi-empirical formulae are used to evaluate the damage of concrete targets struck normally by missiles. For soft and deformable projectiles the empirical and semi-empirical formulae are multiplied by a flexibility factor to evaluate the damage. In this study we conducted experiments on reinforced concrete slabs struck by rigid and soft projectiles and analyzed the damage of the reinforced concrete slabs under impact loading. The buckling energy absorbed by the deformation of the soft body was calculated to obtain the flexibility factor and then applied it to the empirical and semi-empirical formulae for rigid projectiles. In addition, the experimental results were also compared with the formulae based on the dimensionless energy index.
