Description

Artificial computational boundaries adopted in a numerical model may be classified into two categories; one is open boundary and the other is specified boundary. It is difficult for us not to make use of an open boundary condition in an ocean numerical model because of limitations of computational resources. There are many kinds of open boundary conditions used in a model. Since characteristics of each open boundary condition are quite different, what kind of conditions we should choose is one of important factors for success of numerical modelings. In this paper, some kinds of open boundary conditions are described and discussed. Also results of several numerical experiments are compared with each other in order to understand characteristics of each open boundary condition. Finally we investigate the sensitivity of the interior response to the imposition of open boundary conditions on what variables.
