Description

Sustainable utilization of groundwater is necessary for its conservation. Making opportunities to learn about groundwater in elementary schools is an important to foster the attitude to conserve groundwater. In this study, we made an educational material based on 3-stage tank model by which students in 5th and 6th grade of elementary schools learn the basic knowledge of groundwater such as the forest’s function of groundwater recharge. The educational material is composed of 3-stage tanks in which the sponges in the aquifers at the bottom of the forest area reserve water, which flows slowly out. It represents the following two points:(1)forest is the main reservoir of groundwater, (2)groundwater has longer residence time than surface water. In the sprinkling experiment over the educational material, we quantitatively confirmed the two points such as the difference in the time lag of the outflow peaks and the residence time among the three layers. In the demonstration of the educational material and the interview to 13 teachers mainly in elementary school, most of them judged that it is easy for students in elementary school to understand the above two points.
