Abstract

There have been few studies of the role of emotional elements in the sociology of Max Weber. However, if we thoroughly search his analyses of domination or religion, it becomes clear that Weber gave a great deal of attention to the emotional elements. The purpose of this paper is to uncover this by clarifying the position of emotion of honor in his sociology.
First, this paper show that Weber illuminated pride in terms of “Würdegefühl,” which generally represent the universal sense of honor. At the same time, Weber analyzed that the concrete forms of “Würdegefühl” depend on the status to which the actor belongs and that it is mediated by the various concepts of honor and accordingly formed diversely.
Second, Weber claimed that “Würdegefühl” plays an important role in many contexts of macro social structure. For example, in study of dominance structures, he noted that administrative executives conduct administrative activities for honor. It is indispensable for maintaining the dominance relationship that they are performing administrative activities motivated by the self-esteem, especially in the case of feudalism and domination by honoratiores. In study of religions, Weber also emphasized that pride of the dominated strata affects religious contents and the easier acceptance of religion by these strata than the privileged strata.
Finally, when Weber distinguished “status” from the concept of “class” and set it apart, he put the examination of emotion of honor as a basic methodological perspective in all sociological research. He emphasized honor as well as economic interests as the motive of actions, and thought that both of those are the major elements determining the structure of social dominance.
