Abstract

Schelling was at the time of publication of “The Lectures on the Method of University Studies”(1803) quite stimulated by Kant’s “Dispute between the Faculties”(1798). They had indeed different views concerning how to situate the faculty of philosophy in the university, but they were of one mind on the idea that the university is a place to search for truth. They criticized the pragmatism from that perspective and made an assertion that the university must have freedom from the state. It is today of great importance to look at Kant’s and Schelling’s thinking on studies in the university, because people deal with it now only from a pragmatic standpoint of view in disregard of its original purpose to search for truth.
