Abstract

The effect of the installation position of tabs on the flow characteristics of a rectangular jet was studied experimentally using the flow visualization and X-type hotwire anemometry. The flat tabs of delta configuration were placed on the major-axis, minor-axis and, in both major- and minor- axes side of a 2:1 rectangular nozzle. Measurements were made for a nozzle exit velocity of 4.5 m/s and for Reynolds number based on the height of nozzle (H) of 9,000. In the case of the rectangular jet with tabs in major-axis, the minor axis spread was more promoted than the major axis spread, and the axis-switching location moved closer to the nozzle exit than in the case without tabs. On the other hand, in the case of the rectangular jet with tabs in minor-axis, the minor axis spread was more suppressed than the major axis spread, and the axis-switching location moved farther from the nozzle exit than in the case without tabs. Moreover, in the case of the rectangular jet with tabs in both axes, the axis-switching location moved between tabs in major-axis and tabs in minor-axis. Placing tabs at the nozzle exit significantly affects the axis-switching location and hence, the overall jet development.
