Performance Improvement of Straight Darrieus Type Wind Turbine by Comma Shaped Rotor

Abstract

<p>In late years, from the viewpoints of drying up of fossil fuels such as oil or coal, and prevention of global warming, the renewable energy such as solar power generation or wind power generation attracts attention. A wind power generation can generate electricity with relatively low cost in renewable energy. A highly efficient propeller type wind turbine is generally used for wind power generation, but disadvantages are that the yaw control to the direction of wind is needed, and propeller type wind turbine is noisy. A Darrieus type wind turbine has the features that the control for wind direction is unnecessary, and low noise, which is suitable for using in a residential area. In this paper we improve the performance of wind turbine by mounting the comma shaped rotor in a Darrieus type wind turbine. The effect of bucket diameter of comma shaped rotor on performance of wind turbine was examined by experiment varying bucket diameter. As a result, it was clarified that the wind turbine with bucket diameter of 120 mm indicated the highest power coefficient, and the wind turbine performance was superior compared with the wind turbine having cylindrical rotor at low tip speed ratio region. Moreover, the effect of comma shaped rotor on performance of wind turbine was examined by numerical simulation. As a result, it was found that the comma shaped rotor increased the torque at low tip speed ratio region with restraining the flow separation from the wing.</p>
