Description

Objective: Ankle pain is liable to occur among finswimmers. This study aimed to determine relevant factors for ankle pain among competitive finswimmers to prevent ankle injury.

Methods: A questionnaire survey targeted junior high school age and older of all Japanese finswimming championship competitors in 2016 (314 finswimmers). We sent the surveys to all representatives of the targeted competitors, and received 79 valid responses (49 males and 30 females). Ankle pain, history of ankle sprain, feeling of looseness or instability in the ankle, frequency of executing exercises, consciousness of ankle use during finswimming, and subjective onset factors for ankle pain comprised the questionnaire. Binomial logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate associations between ankle pain and nominal and ratio scale items. The significance level was set at 5%.

Results: Among current feeling of looseness or instability in the ankle (n=27), especially, current feeling of looseness or instability in the ankle while using fins (n=23) showed a significantly high association with current ankle pain (n=27) (p<.01, odds ratio 28.5, 95%CI 7.7‒105.9). The most common subjective onset factors for ankle pain was the feeling of looseness in the ankle (n=12/36). History of ankle sprain was also indicated as a subjective onset factor for ankle pain (n=3/36). The executing frequency of trunk exercise was 68.4%, while that of ankle exercise was 26.6%.

Conclusion: Our results revealed that the feeling of looseness or instability in the ankle while using fins was a significant relevant factor for ankle pain caused by finswimming, furthermore, the subjective onset factors for ankle pain suggested that appropriate preventive measures are essential.
