Abstract

This paper proposes a method for estimating position and direction of testing query panoramic images for a given panoramic image database associated with geotags. The method consists of two main steps: (a) it represents the panoramic image as vertical tiles of images and matches them while preserving coarse spatial relationships of features in panoramic images; (b) it expands the database of panoramic images by adding new positions and synthesizing virtual panoramas to suppress visual artifacts due to difference in positions. We conduct the experiments using 1541 Google Street View panoramic images downloaded from the 700 × 700 area and demonstrate the efficiency of the tiled representation and the database expansion.
