Through CVT, which is one of the transmissions, engine power can be transmitted while holding efficiency in rotation speed of the engine in order to reduce fuel consumption. While various CVTs have been proposed, we propose a continuously variable transmission using a link mechanism (hereinafter referred to as L-CVT). As an advantage of CVT using a linkage such as slider crank mechanism, which is one of the four-bar linkages, L-CVT can change the gear ratio from zero to infinity. Also, the L-CVT does not need any hydraulic or frictional mechanisms. As a feature of the L-CVT, the output rotation can be driven as only a one-way rotation in the transmission because a one-way clutch is put on the output shaft. In this paper, we develop a new type of continuously variable transmission which can drive conduction force for bi-directional (CW/CCW) rotation (hereinafter referred to as bi-directional L-CVT). The bi-directional L-CVT is composed of a couple of L-CVTs with a planetary gear, and it can realize the conduction for bi-directional rotation in the output axis. Also, we examine the characteristics of the bi-directional L-CVT system by measuring the transmission gear ratio with an encoder, and the torque with torque sensor.
