This paper explores how the newcomer 1.5 generation who migrated to Japan after reaching school age, but before reaching adolescence, transform their belongingness and future perspectives between two “Homes.” The data used in this research were based on semi-structured interviews conducted with eleven newcomer adolescents and on participant observations conducted in churches and a support center.

The newcomer 1.5 generation has formed transnational ties with their family members who have migrated and worked in Japan or other countries when they were little. They lived in a transnational social world before they moved.

Their sense of belonging varies depends on their experiences. When they had some difficulties in Japan at first, they missed their home countries. However, as they get used to Japan and make use of comfortable places, Japan comes to feel like home for them. In particular, ethnic churches play an important role for their home making in Japan. They can imagine their home country through interactions with people who have the same ethnicity.

Their sense of home and future perspectives expand in multiple places. Some of them wish to migrate to a country other than Japan by making use of their experiences. Migration is nothing special for them, therefore, they do not necessary to stick to Japan.
