Abstract

This study examines a state university teacher education program in the United States that offers early childhood teaching license to teach three-year-olds to third graders. The author worked for the program as a student teaching supervisor as well as a teaching assistant. The data were collected from June 2004 to August 2005 in an action research conducted by the team of supervisors. The current study analyzed a part of the dataset in order to discuss a possible application to the Japanese context.

The program included group discussions among linguistically diverse members, sharing of individual experiences in the field, interactions with four guest speakers, and visits to the local schools and other cultural communities. These experiences were accompanied by reflection journals and facilitated discussions. The results of the analysis indicated that some of the important elements that could be applied to the Japanese context were as follows: 1) teacher educators’ positive attitude to the current state of the learners, 2) utilization of the existing local cultural resources, 3) mediation by teacher educators to introduce critical perspectives, 4) collaborative inquiry groups to reflect on experiences in the local community and the schools, and 5) teacher educator professional development.
