Abstract

The aim of this paper is to reveal the reasoning behind the youth’s pursuit of dreams from the perspective of feasibility and the paper is a case study of rock-musicians who want to make a living by musical activities. In particular, the content of rock-musicians’ dreams and their interpretations is focused on. In addition, the intention is to examine the effect of real events on the change in reasoning for the dream.

Since the 1980s, “Dream” has been a keyword in educational reforms, especially in the context of academic and career counseling for students. In addition to academic and career counseling, “Dream” is used in various contexts with alternative meanings, such as in the context of a policy document, job hunting, and daily life. Although much attention has been paid to the “Dream,” little is known about the actual condition of the youth pursuing their dreams. Above all, there are no experimental studies regarding the interpretive practice for their dream contents and the process of their fulfillment. To solve these problems, I used data from interviews with five rock-musicians, aged 20 to 32, who performed in various live music venues.

The results of this paper are as follows. ( 1 ) On the one hand, rock-musicians realize the lack of feasibility of their dreams, and on the other hand, they say, “Our dreams can come true.” This paper aims to focus on this inconsistent narrative. ( 2 ) Rock-musicians interpreted their dreams as being feasible. They talked about the feasibility of their dreams by comparing them with the success stories of other musicians in the music industry or of other rock-musicians whom they knew personally. On the other hand, they also recognized that their dreams were difficult to realize. That is to say, while they recognized that their dreams were difficult to realize, they could still narrate the feasibility of their dreams. ( 3 ) The process from recognition of the feasibility of their dreams to continuation of chasing after their dreams is outlined. The lack of feasibility of their dreams facilitated rock-musicians’ musical activities, and they acquired the perception that it takes time to realize dreams. By acquiring this perception, they were able to achieve self-affirmation and hope for realizing their dreams.

In addition, this paper also pointed out that the more you advise rock-musicians to stop pursuing their dreams, the more they do so. Their solution to addressing the feasibility issue of their dreams resulted in continued chasing of their dreams.

This study has the potential to provide a new perspective for previous research which targets the transitions of young people. This paper is particularly significant as it highlights: ( 1 ) a new perspective for comprehending children’s and youths’ dreams and ( 2 ) the process by which the interpretive practice of rock-musicians changes the dreams from fiction into feasible and realistic dreams.

However, the data were drawn from only rock-musicians. Therefore, it is important and valuable to compare other young people who chase other dreams, such as acting, athletics, and so on.
