Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of an oral health care education program on willingness, perception, and attitudes regarding oral health care among dental hygiene students, in order to improve the program. The subjects included 64 dental hygiene students who were enrolled in a school in Fukuoka Prefecture in April 2017. Questionnaire surveys regarding oral health care were distributed to the subjects at the start of the oral health care education program in April 2017 (in the first year) and after finishing the program in April 2019 (in the third year). Their willingness, perception, and attitudes regarding oral health care were compared between the first and third years. Fifty-three (82.8%) of the students participated in both surveys. Almost all of the students were interested in oral health care and more than 80% felt that they wanted to practice oral health care after obtaining their professional qualification. However, there were no significant differences in interest or willingness between the first and third years. The percentages of subjects who perceived that inpatients and cancer patients required oral health care significantly increased after the program (p<0.01). Furthermore, the percentages of subjects who perceived homes, recovery-phase rehabilitation wards, and specialized cancer hospitals as places where oral health care should be provided also significantly increased after the program (p<0.001). The percentage of subjects who perceived that oral health care was effective for the prevention of aspiration pneumonia significantly increased from 56.6% in the first year to 92.5% in the third year (p<0.001). The number of hours that they felt were required to learn oral health care significantly increased after the program (p<0.05).

These results suggest that the education program related to oral health care might affect the perception and attitudes in relation to oral health care among dental hygiene students and that further improvement of the program is needed based on the lack of improvement in their willingness, perception, and attitudes in relation to oral health care.
