Abstract

In this paper, we analyze the qualitative differences in working hours and discuss the effects of work style reform. Specifically, we divided the total working hours into three parts: substantial duties, miscellaneous duties, and waiting time, and analyzed the effects of these differences on wage, job satisfaction and workload. As a result of analyzing the individual data of about 17,000 regular employees under 59 years old, the job satisfaction was maximized at 37 hours worked per week. In relation to life time, the increase in waiting time was related to sleeping time, the reduction of substantial duties was related to housework and childcare, and the reduction of peripheral duties was related to the creation of free time. Increase in working hours causes relative poverty of housework and childcare. Regarding work style reform, telework reduces substantial duties time and promotes compatibility with housework and childcare, which causes that free time and sleep time could be reduced. These results suggest that work style reform have different effects on living time through differences in the quality of working hours.
