Abstract

Perithecia, stem of ascocarps, and mycelia from host insects of both Cordyceps militaris and C. formicarum were inoculated independently on an agar medium formulated from yeast, inosine and glucose. Mature ascocarps were observed in the cultures derived from stems of both C. militaris and C. formicarum 80 days and 278 days after inoculation, respectively. On the other hand, the synnemata grew in the cultures from perithecia and mycelia of these fungi in approximately 40 days (C. militaris) and 170 days (C. formicarum) after inoculation. Further, the same mature ascocarps were formed out of agar medium when stems of mature ascocarp from the cultured C. formicarum were inoculated into new agar media.
