Abstract

In conventional sprite video coding scheme, a consolidated image (sprite) is generated from a sequence of video frames containing zoom/pan camera operations. Then the sprite is encoded and referenced to encode the video. Since the sprite is generally larger (in pixels) than each video frame, special coding of large sprite picture is availed in MPEG-4 Main Profile. Therefore, in other video coding standards such as MPEG-2, MPEG-4/AVC or MPEG-H HEVC, it has not been possible to utilize sprite for video coding. In this paper, novel sprite-based video coding scheme with next-generation video coding standard, MPEG-I VVC, is proposed. Simulation results demonstrate 22-32% gain in BD-Rate and 7-11% encoding time reduction.
