Abstract

The present study developed the method of measurement and estimation of valve opening-closing responses in brackish clam Corbicula japonica using a hall element sensor in order to comprehensively understand biochemical- and individual-level responses against environmental stress. Using a relationship between hall element sensor–magnet distance and voltage for each individual, valve distance can be estimated. The clam exposed to municipal wastewater with 5× dilution showed that valve-movement frequency was increased (p<0.05) and valve-opening duaration was decreased (p<0.05), while valve-opening amplitude and valve-opening degree were not changed (p>0.05). We conclude that valve opening-closing responses can be a good individual-level indicator to assess the clam behavior exposed to environmental stress.
