Abstract

Tsunami-driven objects have potential to cause adverse effects on relief and recovery activities after tsunami disasters. In this study, model experiments were conducted to understand effects of initial layout of rectangular objects on their motion driven by a tsunami. In the case that the objects were closely layouted to each other at an interval of the object width, interaction between the objects was not negligible. An oblique object in a tsunami flow has a transverse component of motion, because the lift force on the object is induced by the tsunami flow. Increase of the arranged number of objects in the direction of a tsunami flow diminishes the motion of the gravitational center of a group of objects driven by the tsunami, because of interaction of objects with the flow.
